Elon Musk and Dogecoin: every public moment, dated and sourced

Elon Musk's first Dogecoin tweet was on April 2, 2019. He's posted about DOGE dozens of times since. Three moments materially moved the price: the Saturday Night Live appearance on May 8, 2021 (DOGE all-time high $0.7376, then a sharp sell-off), the X logo swap on April 3, 2023 (price up ~30% on the day), and the SpaceX DOGE-1 announcement on May 9, 2021. Here's the full chronology.

The three price-moving moments

May 8, 2021 ·Saturday Night Live

Musk hosted SNL. The DOGE community had hyped the appearance for weeks; price ran from $0.30 in early April to $0.69 the day before the show, peaked intraday at $0.7376 (per Yahoo Finance daily-high data), then fell sharply during the broadcast as Musk's "Weekend Update" segment had him playing a financial expert who admits DOGE is "a hustle."

By Monday morning, DOGE was around $0.50, off ~30% from the intraday peak. By the end of May 2021, it was $0.31. The event remains the all-time high through 2026.

Whether the SNL segment crashed DOGE or whether profit-taking on a fully-priced-in event drove the sell-off is debatable. What's not debatable: that single day produced the most volume DOGE had ever seen, and the high-water mark hasn't been retested.

April 3, 2023 ·The X logo swap

Twitter, recently renamed X under Musk's ownership, swapped its bird logo for the Shiba Inu Doge meme. The change lasted three days. DOGE jumped roughly 30% on the day of the swap, peaking briefly above $0.10 from a starting price of $0.07. Coverage in the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, and Reuters was extensive within hours.

The swap was widely interpreted as foreshadowing a DOGE-X payment integration. As of 2026, no production payment integration has shipped. Subsequent Musk references to DOGE on X have produced smaller and smaller price reactions, suggesting the market has gradually discounted the integration probability.

May 9, 2021 ·SpaceX DOGE-1 announcement

The day after SNL. SpaceX announced that Geometric Energy Corporation had paid for a 40-kilogram lunar payload entirely in DOGE. It was advertised as "the first commercial space mission funded entirely with cryptocurrency." DOGE briefly rallied on the announcement before continuing the post-SNL slide.

The mission manifested on a Falcon 9 rideshare. After multiple delays through 2022, 2023, and into 2024, the payload finally launched in 2024 (verify exact date and outcome from SpaceX press releases at write time). The DOGE-1 payload is largely symbolic from a commercial standpoint, but it produced a sustained narrative for the SpaceX-DOGE connection.

The fuller chronology

Beyond the three big moments, dozens of Musk-DOGE references have produced shorter-lived market moves. The pattern is consistent: tweet, immediate spike of 5-15%, partial give-back within hours.

The trend is clear: each event produces a smaller and shorter-lived reaction than the previous one. The market has gradually discounted Musk-DOGE optionality as integrations haven't materialized.

What was actually said vs. what was reported

One of the recurring patterns is media coverage that escalates Musk's actual statements. A few examples worth disentangling:

"Tesla accepts Dogecoin." Half-true. Tesla announced in early 2022 that some online merchandise (specific items, not the cars) could be paid for with DOGE. The integration covers a small subset of Tesla products and has stayed limited. Most "Tesla accepts DOGE" headlines collapse this into the false impression that you can buy a Model 3 with DOGE.

"Musk owns billions of DOGE." Musk has said publicly that he holds Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Dogecoin. He has not disclosed amounts. The 2022 class action alleged market manipulation through tweet-and-sell behavior; it was dismissed with prejudice in August 2024. Treat any specific claim about Musk's DOGE holdings as speculation unless sourced to court filings.

"Twitter/X will use DOGE for tipping." Often-implied, never-shipped. As of 2026, no production DOGE tipping integration exists on X.

The class action: Johnson v. Musk

In June 2022, Keith Johnson and several co-plaintiffs filed a class action against Elon Musk, Tesla, and SpaceX in the Southern District of New York. The complaint alleged Musk's DOGE-related social media activity constituted a pump-and-dump scheme that harmed retail investors. Damages sought: $258 billion.

Musk's legal team filed motions to dismiss and the complaint was amended four times. In August 2024, Judge Alvin Hellerstein dismissed the fourth amended complaint with prejudice, holding that the statements at issue were aspirational puffery rather than factual claims a reasonable investor could rely on. The plaintiffs lodged a notice of appeal and then withdrew it, which ended the case. PACER (Public Access to Court Electronic Records) remains the authoritative source for the docket, and the filings are public.

Whatever the outcome, the case has produced a useful side-effect: forced public statements from Musk's counsel about the legal framing of celebrity-driven crypto activity. Future cases of this type will cite this docket.

What this means for DOGE going forward

Two questions worth holding separately.

Will Musk keep posting about DOGE? Probably yes, intermittently. The cost to him of a tweet is zero, the entertainment value is high, and DOGE has been part of his public persona for over half a decade.

Will Musk-driven catalysts move the price like they did in 2021? Probably not. The discount the market applies to Musk-DOGE announcements has grown with each unfulfilled implication. A real, shipped, X-DOGE payment integration would still move the price meaningfully. Another teasing tweet probably won't.

Frequently asked

How much does Elon Musk have in DOGE?

He's said he holds Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Dogecoin. He has not publicly disclosed specific amounts. Any claim about a specific DOGE balance is speculation unless sourced to court filings.

Did Musk start Dogecoin?

No. Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer launched DOGE on December 6, 2013. Musk's first DOGE-related tweet was over five years later.

Why does Musk like Dogecoin?

His public statements have cited the meme value, the low transaction fees, and the irony of "the people's crypto" being the one that's not taken seriously by traditional finance. None of that is a deep technical thesis.

Will X integrate DOGE in 2026?

No public timeline has been committed. Musk has hinted at it for five years. The market has gradually stopped pricing it in.

Is Musk's DOGE activity legal?

The Johnson v. Musk class action argued parts of it weren't, and it lost: dismissed with prejudice in August 2024 on the ground that the tweets were puffery rather than actionable statements of fact. That is one district court's answer rather than a general licence, but no court has held Musk's DOGE posting unlawful.
